On Tuesday 14 May, the University of Kinshasa, the leading institution of higher and university education in the Democratic Republic of Congo, hosted a historic event. Dr Debora Kayembe Buba, lawyer, linguist and human rights activist, was awarded the prestigious degree of Doctor Honoris Causa. This honour makes her the first woman to receive this title from the University of Kinshasa since its creation in 1954.

Indeed, this latest title in Dr Debora Kayembe’s career is a shining example of what can be achieved by someone who dares to dream big, works tirelessly and never gives up. Her rise from humble beginnings to become a leading figure in the field of human rights embodies the possibility of overcoming systemic and societal barriers. To this day, she represents a true source of inspiration and a role model for African youth, proving that limits can be broken with courage and perseverance.

It is no secret that Dr Debora Kayembe’s impact extends beyond Africa’s borders. As the first black person to serve as Rector of the University of Edinburgh, she has not only broken down racial barriers but has also brought about significant changes in university policy, promoting inclusion and diversity. Her exemplary leadership and clear vision for a more just and equitable world have earned her worldwide recognition and honours.

Dr Debora Kayembe: A driving force for peace, inclusion, development and education

This new distinction for Dr. Debora Kayembe honours her many contributions in key areas such as the fight for peace, education, the defence of human rights and community development.

In her struggle, Dr Debora Kayembe has always placed peace, inclusion, development and education at the heart of her commitment. Aware that education is the foundation of all change, but also a powerful tool for empowerment, she has worked tirelessly to promote access to education, particularly in the eastern region of the DRC, which has been affected by conflict for several decades now.

As a lawyer specialising in international law, Dr. Debora Kayembe has distinguished herself through her defence work (at international level), notably on behalf of the Democratic Republic of Congo, pointing the finger at the responsibility of the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, for the conflicts in the east and denouncing the bill to expel refugees from the UK to Rwanda.

Dr Debora Kayembe: “Africa will be free…”

Dr Debora Kayembe was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Kinshasa in the presence of several authorities, rectors and eminent university professors, and after a closed-door deliberation by the members of the jury. The honour was presented to her by Dr Jean-Marie Kayembe Ntumba, Rector of this prestigious institution, the first of its kind in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The ceremony, rich in colour and emotion, brought together academic and political figures from a wide range of backgrounds to celebrate this historic recognition. This honorary doctorate is not only recognition of her outstanding contributions, but also a symbol of inspiration for younger generations. Dr. Debora Kayembe’s speech, full of passion and determination, touched the hearts of those present and instilled a deep sense of pride and hope.

Speaking after the presentation of the diploma, Dr. Debora Kayembe swept the room with her eloquence. Her speech, filled with faith and hope, captured the attention of everyone in the room. She shared powerful words that resonated deeply with the aspirations of many Congolese and Africans for a better future. She said:

‘Everything I have experienced in my life is what has given me the strength to stand up and give the best of myself. The gift that you have, the gift that God has given you, is not for you, it’s for others. Exercise the talent you have, share it in our community and contribute to the upliftment of our country, the DRC. Believe me, the African continent will be free, whether I’m alive or not  ».

Dr Debora Kayembe: Honorary Ambassador of the University of Kinshasa

In addition to her honorary doctorate, Dr Debora Kayembe had already been honoured last March with the title of Ambassador of the University of Kinshasa for the year 2024. This recognition of her influence and commitment was marked at the same ceremony, where Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe, Rector of the University of Kinshasa, presented her with the diploma and a medal symbolising her new role as ambassador of Unikin.

A promising future…

The role of ambassador for the University of Kinshasa adds to Dr Debora Kayembe’s many responsibilities and commitments. In this new role, she continues to set an example by using her position and influence to bring about positive change and inspire the next generation of African leaders. In so doing, she will be helping to restore the image of higher and university education in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The University of Edinburgh will support the University of Kinshasa in participating in consortium activities at an international level. In addition, the University of Kinshasa and the University of Edinburgh have agreed to work together to facilitate the digitisation of current management data and archives. The recognition of Dr Debora Kayembe as an ambassador for the University of Kinshasa underlines her significant impact on higher education in the DRC. Her commitment to promoting the university’s values and missions internationally will be further evidence of her unwavering dedication to the advancement of her community. Combining her ambassadorial role with her new Honorary Doctorate, Dr. Kayembe continues to blaze an inspiring trail, demonstrating that selflessness and determination can truly transform entire communities and nations.
