On Tuesday 14 May, the University of Kinshasa, the leading institution of higher and university education in the Democratic Republic of Congo, hosted a historic event. Dr Debora Kayembe Buba, lawyer, linguist and human rights activist, was awarded the prestigious degree of Doctor Honoris Causa. This honour makes her the first woman to receive this title from the University of Kinshasa since its creation in 1954.

This new distinction for Dr. Debora Kayembe honours her many contributions in key areas such as the fight for peace, education, the defence of human rights and community development.

As a lawyer specialising in international law, Dr. Debora Kayembe has distinguished herself through her defence work (at international level), notably on behalf of the Democratic Republic of Congo, pointing the finger at the responsibility of the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, for the conflicts in the east and denouncing the bill to expel refugees from the UK to Rwanda.
