In the world of leaders, few do manage to combine strength, compassion and commitment to human welfare. Dr Debora Kayembe stands out as a remarkable exception, brilliantly fusing these three essential qualities for impactful leadership. Former Rector of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and visionary founder of the humanitarian organisation Full Options Global, Dr. Debora Kayembe embodies the values of authentic leadership and social responsibility. Her remarkable career, punctuated by years of academic and humanitarian commitment, bears witness to her unwavering dedication to the advancement of society and collective well-being. During her time at the helm of the University of Edinburgh, she has been able to redefine the standards of academic excellence, while cultivating an environment conducive to innovation and diversity.

A humanitarian commitment without borders

Founder of Full Options Global, a humanitarian organisation dedicated to eradicating social isolation and promoting human rights, Dr. Debora Kayembe courageously tackles the world’s most pressing challenges. Her organisation works tirelessly to reduce poverty, promote health and education, and cultivate racial harmony through innovative and inclusive initiatives.

Dr. Kayembe’s leadership is rooted in a deep sense of responsibility to the global community. Her advocacy of equal opportunity, social justice and cultural diversity has made her an influential and respected voice in international circles. Her holistic approach to leadership is not limited to individual success, but extends to creating more equitable and inclusive societies. At the heart of her mission to lead others lies a profound belief in humanity’s ability to transcend obstacles and achieve lasting progress. Her voice resonates as a call to collective action, inviting everyone to join the movement for a fairer and more inclusive future.

Dr. Debora Kayembe Buba : Ambassador of progress

In a world where gender stereotypes and social barriers persist, Dr Debora Kayembe Buba stands out for her unwavering commitment to pushing back the limits imposed on women and breaking established norms. On Monday 11 March 2024, she was awarded a diploma by the University of Kinshasa, becoming the first female ambassador of this leading institution of higher education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The event took place during the celebrations marking Unikin’s 70th anniversary, in recognition of her exceptional career and her dedication to the promotion of gender equality, the fight against racism and the defence of human rights around the world.

Dr Kayembe’s appointment as ambassador of the University of Kinshasa marks a significant milestone in the history of this renowned institution. It is a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions not only to education and research, but also to the promotion of gender equality and human rights throughout the region.

The fruitful collaboration between Dr Kayembe and Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe, Rector of Unikin, illustrates the power of the inter-institutional partnership for the progress of the education system in the DRC. Their exchanges, which began during Dr Debora Kayembe’s visit to Kinshasa and were consolidated by Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe’s visit to the University of Edinburgh, have paved the way for new opportunities for academic cooperation between the University of Kinshasa and the University of Edinburgh.

A voice against injustice

Following her involvement in denouncing the injustice suffered by the Congolese people in the east of the country, Dr Debora Kayembe was appointed on Tuesday 8 March by the Congolese Action Youth Platform as the patron of the Genocost campaign for 2024.

The GenoCost campaign, initiated by CAYP, commemorates the genocide of the Congolese people every year and raises awareness of the need to combat the silence and minimisation of atrocities. Chosen as this year’s ambassador, Debora Kayembe will continue to speak out loud and clear on behalf of the millions of Congolese victims, demanding truth, justice, reparations and the prevention of any repetition of such abominable crimes.

Honoured with the ‘’DRC women of excellence Award’’

On Saturday 09 March, at the International Women’s Day ceremony in London, Dr Debora Kayembe was honoured with the prestigious « Prix d’Excellence de la Femme Congolaise ». This trophy, which goes far beyond a simple award, is a vibrant testimony to her remarkable impact within the Congolese community.

The carefully engraved words on the trophy perfectly capture the essence of DrKayembe’s achievements: « In recognition of your immense contribution to the community and your exceptional accomplishments ». These words reflect the breadth of her commitment to her country and her continent, as well as her bold vision for a better future for all.

Official launch of the « Deep Congo » campaign: for lasting peace in the DRC

The official launch of the « Congo Profond » campaign initiated by Dr Debora Kayembe Buba took place on 02 April from the United Kingdom and throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative aims to explore the depths of the Congo, celebrating its rich socio-cultural heritage and calling for a profound transformation to promote peace and combat poverty in the region.

Deep Congo will begin its activities in the regions of Katanga and Kivu in May and September 2024 respectively. This initial launch will mark the start of a journey across all the Congolese territories. Thereafter, the campaign will gradually spread to other regions such as Équateur, Bandundu, Kongo Central and beyond, embracing the diversity and cultural richness of the entire DRC.

At the heart of this initiative is a vibrant call to rediscover our identity, to take concrete action and to show solidarity in transforming our beloved country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Congo Profond is thus positioning itself as a campaign for change and a driving force for lasting peace. The ravages of decades of armed conflict and violence have deeply scarred the Congolese social fabric, but this campaign aims to heal these wounds and pave the way for a future of reconciliation and prosperity.

It is essential to stress that the success of this campaign will depend on the commitment of everyone: from dedicated Congolese citizens to committed international partners, non-governmental organisations and state institutions. Everyone is invited to contribute to this noble cause and to support the movement towards a more united, peaceful and prosperous Congo.
