In an atmosphere filled with appreciation for her loyal service to this institution, the Law Faculty of the University of Edinburgh held a significant conference on Thursday, February 29, marking the last day of a remarkable chapter in Dr. Debora Kayembe’s tenure as head of this establishment.
Indeed, the theme of this grand event focused on « immigration law between the United Kingdom and Rwanda, » as well as the recent decision of the British Supreme Court. As a reminder, the United Kingdom and Rwanda were on the verge of concluding an agreement that would allow for the transfer of asylum-seeking refugees from the United Kingdom to Rwanda. An agreement that Madame Debora Kayembe vehemently opposed, raising her voice by recalling the historical facts that have already occurred in the Great Lakes region.
The Law Faculty of the University of Edinburgh was adamant about having Rector Debora Kayembe for this final session, as well as for a last communal meal that followed immediately after with the public law and international law working group. One of the most touching moments of this event during the meal, where, in an atmosphere of mutual respect, members of the group expressed their gratitude for the Rector Kayembe’s numerous contributions to the faculty, congratulating her with a thunderous applause.
In June next year, the University of Edinburgh will officially bid farewell to Rector Debora Kayembe at a special reception held in her honor. This event will mark the conclusion of an exceptional chapter in the university’s history and will allow the academic community to pay tribute to the Rector for her years of devoted service and remarkable achievements. It is worth noting that in her work schedule, the Rector of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Debora Kayembe, still has four trips to the Middle East and the Far East on behalf of the university, where she will continue passionately sharing her experiences as a leader and Rector of this prestigious University.
Concerned about what is happening in the East of her country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in Palestine, the Rector of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Debora Kayembe, once again expressed her solidarity with these two peoples, paying them a poignant tribute. Clad in black and wearing a symbolic scarf, the Rector thus expressed her solidarity and compassion towards those who have suffered from armed conflicts in these regions.
