On Monday, February 26th, Dr. Debora Kayembe, Rector of the University of Edinburgh, held her final meeting of the university’s Court, the most powerful body of this institution, thus marking the end of a remarkable chapter at the helm of this establishment. With her unwavering commitment to justice and solidarity, Dr. Kayembe has left an indelible mark on the academic landscape of the United Kingdom.

From the outset, Dr. Debora Kayembe appeared at this important meeting dressed in black, a sign of solidarity with the victims of the Congolese genocide. Her choice to wear a scarf around her neck was also noted, a sign of her support for the Palestinian people who are also going through a difficult time.

In her farewell address to this institution that she has held dear throughout her tenure, Mrs. Debora Kayembe reviewed her journey and recounted her story, starting from her journey in the DRC to her arrival in the United Kingdom as a political refugee. A challenging journey, filled with obstacles but one that has now allowed her to be the first black individual elected Rector of this prestigious university.

Campaign on « The Deep Congo »: Call for support for victims of the congolese genocide

Dr. Debora Kayembe, during this meeting, shared a poignant moment that deeply resonated with the participants. With palpable emotion, she recounted the history of the tragic massacres that continue to tear apart the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in its eastern region. Her vibrant narrative served as a catalyst for raising awareness for the « Deep Congo » campaign.

Indeed, this campaign aims to provide vital support to the victims of these massacres, offering assistance in psychological, financial, and material aspects. Dr. Debora Kayembe emphasized the importance of this initiative in preserving human value and dignity, calling for a collective and supportive response from the university community.

She also urged university decision-makers to rally behind this noble cause by offering financial and material support. She underscored that every contribution, no matter how modest, would help alleviate the burden of the victims and rebuild lives shattered by violence and conflict.

Call to cultivate peace and justice at the University

She urged university decision-makers to place the education of peace and justice at the heart of their educational mission. In a world marked by divisions, Dr. Debora Kayembe emphasized the crucial importance of promoting respect and tolerance within the university, in order to positively influence the world around us. Continuing her speech, Mrs. Kayembe, Rector of the University of Edinburgh, dedicated her tenure to her two children, who have been unwavering supporters throughout this journey. Furthermore, she praised the efforts made by her two children, achieving significant milestones and, through their own efforts, gaining admission to the world’s most prestigious academic institutions.

A leadership based on listening, understanding, and empathy

As it drew to a close, this final meeting of Dr. Kayembe was marked by a poignant moment where the students’ voices were heard denouncing the rise in housing prices. In a gesture of exemplary leadership, Dr. Kayembe assured the students that their concerns would be taken into account and that concrete measures would follow to address the situation. Since the start of the meeting at 9 a.m., discussions have been fueled by open and constructive dialogue among various members of the university community, under the enlightened leadership of Mrs. Debora Kayembe.

The meeting concluded at 5 p.m. in an emotional moment, where members of the university community embraced each other in a surge of love and solidarity. Tears flowed, testifying to the depth of the bonds forged throughout Dr. Debora Kayembe’s tenure.

As a respected leader and frontrunner, Dr. Debora Kayembe has demonstrated her ability to listen, understand, and act in favor of the well-being of the Edinburgh university community. Her commitment to students and her concern for social justice have left an indelible impression, reminding everyone of the true values of compassion and solidarity that should guide our actions within society.

Dr. Debora Kayembe’s legacy as a visionary leader and advocate for rights remains engraved in memory. Her example will inspire future generations to place justice and tolerance at the heart of all activities.
