Yesterday, Monday 30 September 2024, Dr Debora Kayembe marked a turning point in her career by celebrating 30 years of tireless dedication to social justice and the protection of human rights. It was at the age of 19 that this emblematic figure of international law began her fight, which was to become her lifelong mission.
It all began at the Faculty of Law of the Université Libre de Kinshasa (ULK), in the commune of Limete. It was there that Ms Debora Kayembe, still very young and full of passion for justice and human rights, laid the foundations for her commitment. After forging her convictions in Kinshasa, she continued her work in the province of Kongo Central, touching many lives through her fight for equity and human dignity.
A global journey for social justice
What sets Dr Debora Kayembe apart is her ability to take her fight far beyond the borders of her native country. Her name has become synonymous with hope and defending the rights of the most vulnerable around the world. Through her humanitarian organisation, Full Options Global SCIO, she has made her mark in promoting equality and diversity, and defending human rights. Her actions also aim to improve access to health and education, promote religious and racial harmony, and combat inequality in all its forms.
Among Dr. Debora Kayembe’s many initiatives, the ‘Freedom Walk’ campaign launched in Scotland in 2020 remains one of the most emblematic. Faced with systemic racism in a local community, Dr. Debora Kayembe set up the Freedom Walk to raise awareness of the fight against racism, promote harmony between communities and encourage the decolonisation of the education system. This initiative has inspired social justice campaigners around the world, and particularly in the UK.
In May 2023, Dr. Kayembe, via Full Options Global SCIO, orchestrated another major humanitarian campaign, this time in response to the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. These tremors, which affected 14 million people, left millions of families in need. Dr Debora Kayembe and her team provided material, financial and psychological assistance to thousands of survivors, reinforcing her commitment to a world where no one is left behind in times of crisis.
A return to his roots in the Democratic Republic of Congo
In April 2024, Dr Debora Kayembe returned to where it all began, in the DRC, to launch the campaign ‘Le Congo Profond: Pour une paix durable en République Démocratique du Congo’. This project, which began in the Greater Katanga area, highlights the DRC’s rich socio-cultural heritage while calling for a profound transformation to bring about lasting peace and sustainable development in all regions of the country. Although the campaign has been temporarily suspended due to the resurgence of monkeypox in the Grand Kivu region, it will resume as soon as the health situation permits.
30 years of dedication…
Today, Dr Debora Kayembe is a source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. In celebrating her 30-year career, she reminds us of the importance of commitment to justice. With her organisation, Full Options Global SCIO, she continues to work for a fairer world, where everyone, regardless of background, colour or creed, is treated with dignity and respect. Her journey, rich in achievements, shows that collective action and a desire for justice can truly change the course of history. Whether in the DRC, Scotland, Turkey or elsewhere, Dr. Debora Kayembe has proved that the fight for social justice and human rights is a global battle that deserves to be fought with passion and resilience.
